Maui Family Vacation Recap: Hyatt Regency Maui & Andaz Maui with Points

A couple of months before our trip, we made a last-minute switch, trading our Fall plans in Kauai with a Summer adventure in Maui. And it turned out to be the perfect decision.

We’ve had good luck finding availability at the Hyatt Regency Maui, and after its devaluation back in March, we knew we wanted to book it before point prices went up again. This hotel continues to be one of our top picks for a young family visiting Hawaii.

Booking Flights with Southwest Companion Pass

Flights to Maui in July were expensive, but thankfully, we had two Southwest Companion Passes that helped offset the cost significantly. We also managed to book before Southwest’s new baggage fees kicked in, which was a nice little win.

5 Nights at Hyatt Regency Maui for 29,000 Points Per Night

We booked two rooms for five nights at the Hyatt Regency Maui at 29,000 points per night, and brought along the whole crew—me, my husband, our 8-year-old son, 3-year-old daughter, and my mom.

We’ve stayed here twice before and loved it just as much this time. Here’s why it’s our favorite family-friendly points hotel in Maui:

  • Beautiful tropical gardens and wildlife (yes, there are penguins)
  • Daily penguin feeding that the kids always love
  • Yard games on open grassy space
  • Amazing Waikomo Shaved Ice on site!
  • Access to the Regency Club (with Globalist status) with breakfast, snacks, and evening bites (&discounted drinks!)
  • A fun kids’ pool and water slide
  • Walkable access to Whalers Village for food, shopping, and ice cream/Acai
  • Free valet parking and 4PM late checkout with Hyatt Globalist status

Our son’s birthday was right after the trip, so I let the hotel know ahead of time and they were so sweet. They had birthday surprises in the room, and my son declared it “the best birthday ever.” That moment made the entire trip worth it.

2 Nights at Andaz Maui for 45,000 Points Per Night

We also decided to splurge and try Andaz Maui for two nights using 45,000 points per night per room. I’ve seen so many great reviews of this property (shoutout to Jess from Travel Mom Squad) and I wanted to experience it for myself.

Let me just say—it was incredible.

Thanks to our Globalist status, we received:

  • Free valet parking

  • Delicious free breakfast buffet for both rooms

  • And the best surprise of all: upgrades for both rooms, including an oceanview suite for us

This suite normally goes for over $2,000 per night. Even the front desk agent commented, “They must like you!” It was spacious, stylish, and had stunning views of the ocean.

Compared to the Hyatt Regency, the Andaz Maui felt more calm and peaceful, but we never felt overcrowded at either hotel. The Andaz has:

  • A family-friendly pool (plus four others)

  • A quiet beach right on-site

  • Complimentary boogie boards and snorkel gear (which our son loved)

  • Great dining options nearby and a popular food truck pod nearby – Kihei Food Truck Oasis

Final Thoughts: Regency vs. Andaz for Families

While we loved the luxury and serenity of the Andaz Maui, our hearts are still with the Hyatt Regency Maui when traveling with kids. It’s just so easy, fun, and the value is unbeatable using points, especially with Globalist perks.

Would I recommend Andaz Maui? Absolutely. But for a longer stay with little ones, Hyatt Regency will likely continue to be our go-to. That said, if you’re looking to splurge for a special occasion or want a more peaceful, upscale experience, Andaz won’t disappoint.
